A groovy hotel right on the beach at Balian, Pondok Pitaya offers a range of accommodation, from double rooms to villas that sleep up to five adults. The gardens add to the tropical vibe of this surf-focussed hotel, and the buildings are Indonesian joglo-style.

What's the appeal?
There's a lovely sense of space at laid-back Pondok Pitaya, where the buildings are separated by big lawns and a lovely garden. The hotel offers two yoga classes each day, and is situated on the beach next to the Balian River.

Rooms
The buildings at this hotel are constructed from wood and bamboo. The rooms have a veranda out front and are comfortable, all with mosquito nets, air-con, hot-water showers and a kettle. There's not much natural light in the rooms – but you'll probably not be going to Balian to stay indoors.

Facilities
There's an excellent restaurant and bar at Pondok Pitaya, as well as a beachfront swimming pool. Yoga glasses are held twice a day in the glass-walled yoga space, which has views out to sea. Yoga classes are Rp125,000 each and you'll need to book in advance at the reception.

Location
Pondok Pitaya is at the surf break in Balian. Because it is right on the beach, it is in the most convenient position for surfers. Most other Balian accommodation is up a hill, so you'll need to carry (or drive) your board up the road.
